Several Nebraska girls soccer teams that failed to win more than they lost a year ago have reversed their fortunes and are looking to extend their 2016 season as district play gets underway this week.

Delving into our research to determine our Nebraska Top 10 girls soccer turnarounds, we discovered that four programs from our Top 10 have earned the right to not only move on, but to wear the district favorite target heading into this week's action.

Elkhorn (B-2), Millard South (A-7), Waverly (B-4) and Scottsbluff (B-8) are the odds-on favorites from our Top 10 to make the girls state soccer tournament at Creighton University's Morrison Stadium beginning Wednesday, May 11. Omaha Roncalli Catholic (B-2) is a No. 2 seed.

Relying on a youth movement of sorts, four of our top five schools made their move in 2016. Freshman forward Gracie Borer leads our No. 1 pick Columbus Lakeview, as well as most of the state, with her 58 points, which includes 25 goals to this point of the season. Elkhorn's Antlers are led by a youngster on offense and another on defense. Freshman Skylar Heinrich leads the way with 46 points on 21 goals and four assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Carlson, meanwhile, has 73 saves in the net.

Lindsey Prokop and Maddie Smith, both freshmen, have been driving forces in Millard South's successful run in 2016. Prokop's 17 goals and 38 points lead the offense, while Smith has made 142 stops in goal. Waverly, on the other hand, has relied on the offense of sophomore Abigail Kastens, who has 21 goals, and freshman Teanna Tenopir's ability to stuff the opposition's shots on goal.

Junior Alexandra Mausbach has scored 17 goals and dished out 11 assists, as she has been a crucial force in turning around Omaha Roncalli Catholic's fortunes this spring.
