Baseball Recap: Gilbert Takes a Loss

If Gilbert was feeling good fresh off their 26-2 takedown of South Mountain on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Tigers took an 8-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Higley Knights on Thursday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Knights this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-5 on Monday.

Johhny King was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Gilbert saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brady Carlin, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Gilbert has also been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-15 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.6 runs over those games. As for Higley, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 15-9.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gilbert will face off against Dobson at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. As for Higley, they will venture away from home to challenge Williams Field at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
