Baseball Recap: Airport Wins High-Profile Matchup Against Hammond

Airport faced Hammond in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Eagles narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Skyhawks 4-3.

Brice Gillette made a big impact no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run over seven innings pitched. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Isahia Clemons, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in March.

Airport's win bumped their record up to 16-4. As for Hammond, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-4 record this season.

Airport will be taking part in a tournament against A.C. Flora at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Eagles 2.8, the Falcons 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Hammond, they will take on River Bluff in a tournament on Wednesday. The Gators' pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so the Skyhawks' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
