Basketball Recap: Tanalian Takes a Loss

Tanalian is still winless after their match against Newhalen on Friday, but the team can take solace in the fact it was the closest they've come to winning. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 30-27 heartbreaker at the hands of the Newhalen Malamutes. The Lynx lost against the Malamutes in their previous head to head back in February of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 58-29 score last time.

Despite the loss, Tanalian saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Erik McGee dropped a double-double on 14 points and 25 boards. Those 25 boards set a new season-high mark for McGee.

Even though they lost, Tanalian smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in five consecutive games.

Tanalian's defeat dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Newhalen, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Tanalian wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 59-37 victory against Holy Rosary Academy on the 11th. As for Newhalen, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 50-38 loss against Birchwood Christian on the 10th.
