Softball Game Preview: South Pointe Stallions vs. York Cougars

South Pointe is 1-9 against York since April of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Stallions will look to defend their home field against the Cougars at 6:00 p.m. South Pointe has given up an average of 16.9 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

South Pointe had been on a four-game streak of scoring at least ten runs, but York put an end to it on Tuesday. The Stallions came up short against the Cougars, falling 16-0.

For York's part, Layla Clayton made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out ten over four innings pitched. Clayton has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-1. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (three).

In other batting news, Marisa Reyes was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kayla Johnson, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

York was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .545. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .324 or higher in eight consecutive contests.

York pushed their record up to 13-3 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for South Pointe, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-12.

Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. South Pointe hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like York struggles in that department as they've been averaging 0.6 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
