Softball Recap: Vela Comes Up Short

Vela was the 17-16 winner over Rowe when they last played one another back in April of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Vela Sabercats fell just short of the Rowe Warriors by a score of 13-12 on Friday. The Sabercats' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Jaylene Rodriguez put in work while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-5. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, Heaven Garcia and Raylee Pearson stepped up to the plate in a big way. Garcia scored a run while going 3-for-5, while Pearson scored two runs while going 3-for-5. The dominant performance gave Garcia a new career-high in hits. Another player making a difference was Ciara Cantu, who scored a run while going 1-for-5.

Even though they lost, Vela kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Vela now has a losing record of 5-6. As for Rowe, the victory snapped their losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 3-8 record.

Looking ahead, Vela will be playing in front of their home fans against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest at 11:00 a.m. on Monday. One thing working in Vela's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last four matchups. As for Rowe, they are taking a road trip to take on Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Rowe has given up an average of 10.6 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
