Baseball Game Preview: Eastern Montgomery Mustangs vs. Giles Spartans

The Eastern Montgomery Mustangs are headed away from home for the first time to square off against the Giles Spartans at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Eastern Montgomery will be strutting in after a victory while Giles will be coming in after a loss.

Last Thursday, Eastern Montgomery got the win against Roanoke Catholic by a conclusive 17-6. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Celtics recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Marshall Tate and Coltin Conner made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Tate pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Conner pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off five hits. What's more, Tate posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. At bat, Tate went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs, while Conner scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Austin Tate was a standout: he scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Cam Sutphin, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Eastern Montgomery always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Roanoke Catholic only posted an OBP of .375.

Meanwhile, Giles lost 10-1 to Grayson County on Friday. The Spartans have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Giles saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jacob Mills, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Eastern Montgomery now has a winning record of 1-0-1. As for Giles, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-2-1.
