Baseball Recap: Gaffney Triumphs

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Eastside, Gaffney was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 win over the York Cougars. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Tucker Whelchel spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on one hit and racked up seven Ks. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Gaffney is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 4-6 otherwise.

At the plate, Sam Smith was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Gage McDaniel was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Gaffney's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 7-7. As for York, they moved to 6-5 with that loss, which also ended their six-game winning streak.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gaffney will welcome Spartanburg at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last three games the Vikings have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one. As for York, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Dreher at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Blue Devils will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
