The Resurrection Christian Cougars will head out to face off against the Weld Central Rebels at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Resurrection Christian will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.
Resurrection Christian's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They blew past Platte Valley 8-0.
Vaughn Green made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, Resurrection Christian got a big performance out of Brayden MacAlmon, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. What's more, MacAlmon posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Weston Johnson also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Resurrection Christian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Platte Valley only posted an OBP of .214.
Meanwhile, Weld Central fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Strasburg on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Indians by a score of 4-3. The Rebels haven't had much luck with the Indians recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Like Resurrection Christian, Weld Central also got a great game from a two-way player: Luke Witzel. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Witzel was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Witzel wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Aidan Grainer, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Resurrection Christian pushed their record up to 7-4 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Weld Central, they now have a losing record of 6-7.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Resurrection Christian has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Weld Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Resurrection Christian beat Weld Central 6-3 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
