Basketball Recap: Elkhorn South Takes a Loss

If Elkhorn South was riding high fresh off their 93-43 takedown of Bryan last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Elkhorn South Storm were just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 52-51 to the Bellevue East Chieftains. The Storm were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Chieftains apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.

When it comes to explaining why Elkhorn South lost, don't look at Cooper Mroczek. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. The match was Mroczek's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Lincoln Schwarz, who posted eight points in addition to seven boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Elkhorn South smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in four consecutive contests.

Bellevue East's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Isaac Gore, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Trey Tolbert, who went 6 of 8 on his way to 16 points and three steals.

Elkhorn South's record now sits at 1-9. As for Bellevue East, their record now sits at 3-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elkhorn South will face off against Benson at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Elkhorn South is facing Benson at the right time seeing as Benson is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Bellevue East, they will square off against Lincoln Southwest at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Bellevue East is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53 points per game this season.
