Softball Game Preview: Lubbock-Cooper Pirates vs. Monterey Plainsmen

The Lubbock-Cooper Pirates will challenge the Monterey Plainsmen at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Lubbock-Cooper is coming into the contest hot, having won their last 15 games.

Last Friday, Lubbock-Cooper got the win against Tascosa by a conclusive 19-5. The result was nothing new for the Pirates, who have now won 18 games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Brooklyn Ray looked comfortable as she struck out seven batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Tatum Southard, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Addison Gunset was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

Lubbock-Cooper kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, Monterey unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Friday. They fell 11-7 to Amarillo.

Lubbock-Cooper's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 23-4. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Monterey, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-10.

Lubbock-Cooper took their victory against Monterey in their previous meeting back in March by a conclusive 7-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Pirates since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
