Recap: Lawrenceville Indians vs. Casey-Westfield Warriors
The Lawrenceville Indians came tearing into Friday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21.6 points) and they left with even more momentum. They enjoyed a cozy 54-37 victory over Casey-Westfield. Given Lawrenceville's advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 73rd, while Casey-Westfield is ranked 277th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Lawrenceville to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bryant Jenkins, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jenkins is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Landon Sanders, who scored 14 points along with four steals.
Several Warriors players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Grant Cochonour, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Cole Gilbert, who scored eight points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Casey-Westfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lawrenceville only pulled down three offensive rebounds.
Lawrenceville's win was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 24-3. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.1 points per game. As for Casey-Westfield, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 14-12.
Lawrenceville will be playing in front of their home fans against Carmi-White County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Lawrenceville focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Friday. As for Casey-Westfield, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 57-44 loss vs. Bloomington Central Catholic on the 10th.
