Baseball Recap: Unity Christian Comes Up Short

After flying high against Blue Ridge last Monday, Unity Christian came back down to earth. The Lions lost 24-7 to the Cumberland Pirates on Thursday. The loss continues a trend for the Lions in their meetings with the Pirates: they've now lost five in a row.

Unity Christian saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Will Marley, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1. Marley is becoming a predictor of the Lions' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 0-3 when he doesn't). Avery Smith also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Unity Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Cumberland, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-6 record this season.

Unity Christian will look to defend their home field on Saturday against Lutheran at 10:00 a.m. The Crusaders will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Lions surely won't give up without a fight. As for Cumberland, they will take on Robinson at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
