Softball Recap: Hughesville Beats Warrior Run for Their Fourth Straight Victory

Hughesville hadn't done well against Warrior Run recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Spartans walked away with a 6-2 win over the Defenders. This was payback for the Spartans, who suffered a 13-12 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Ella Breneisen and Maddie Smith were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Breneisen pitched five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. Meanwhile, Smith tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Breneisen has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Breneisen scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while Smith went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI. That stolen base was Breneisen's first of the season.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Ashlynn Barlett, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Lyla Kinney also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Hughesville, bringing their record up to 4-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games. As for Warrior Run, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 2-3.

Hughesville has already played their next contest (against Juniata), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Warrior Run, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 4-3 victory against South Williamsport on the 4th.
