League recap: Eaton extends winning streak with victory over Sterling

Eaton extended the longest winning streak in 2A Patriot this week by beating Sterling, 52-26. The victory was the ninth in a row for the team.

Strasburg led the league in scoring this week after putting up 54 points on Valley. Jacob Smith ran for 154 yards in the win.

Jeff Merritt put up the best numbers through the air as Fort Lupton fell to Brush. He finished with 11 completions for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Merritt's favorite target this week was Jalen Vasquez, who caught four passes for 86 yards.

Connor Carey was the best wideout in the league this week as the Tigers lost to Eaton. Carey tallied six receptions for 128 yards. Jordan Jackson helped Sterling's passing attack out by catching one ball for 10 yards.

Tanner Fahey made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Indians beat the Vikings. The 6-foot-2 junior forced two fumbles and recorded one fumble.

Austin Ekeler was the most productive running back in 2A Patriot this week. He ran for 256 yards on 23 carries as Bill Mondt's team fell to Bill Mondt's team. Teammate Britten Abbott added to the ground attack by rushing for 93 yards.

The Blue Devils' Merritt and Vasquez have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Merritt has thrown for 1673 yards this season, while Vasquez, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 43 catches for 775 yards. The Reds' Ekeler leads the league in rushing yards with 2176.

Brandon Garza has rushed for 911 yards on 120 carries so far this year.

University made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 11,258 from 11,454. The advance stemmed from a 45-20 victory over the Bulldogs last week.
