Baseball Game Preview: Pilgrim Patriots vs. Cumberland Clippers

The Pilgrim Patriots will venture away from home to take on the Cumberland Clippers at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Pilgrim sitting on three straight victories and Cumberland on eight.

Pilgrim's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They came out on top against Cranston East by a score of 3-0. Surprisingly, this marked the Patriots' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Tyler Boudreau looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Pilgrim saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matthew Wellington, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and one stolen base. Wellington is becoming a predictor of the Patriots' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 5-9 when he doesn't).

Meanwhile, Cumberland faced Bishop Hendricken in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Clippers had just enough and edged out the Hawks 4-2. Surprisingly, this marked the Clippers' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Liam Monahan spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on six hits.

Cumberland's win was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-4. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.7 runs over those games. As for Pilgrim, their record now sits at 7-10.
