Baseball Recap: Del Mar Takes a Loss

Del Mar had lost 11 straight at home dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 3-16 to make it 12. They came up short against the Gilroy Mustangs, falling 13-4. The Dons were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Mustangs earlier this season, when they won 5-2.

As for Gilroy, the win snapped their losing streak at seven games and leaves them with a 7-13 record. Their offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last four games.

For Gilroy's part, they let Abram Valdez and Brennan Neander run wild. Valdez went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, two stolen bases, and one RBI, while Neander went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Neander is becoming a predictor of Gilroy's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is undefeated (and 4-13 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Jared Nelson, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Coming up, Del Mar will take on Oak Grove at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Dons are facing the Eagles at the right time seeing as the Eagles are stuck on a ten-game losing streak. As for Gilroy, they will challenge Christopher at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
