Preview: Woodland Regional Hawks vs. Waterbury Career Academy Spartans
Woodland Regional is 0-4 against Waterbury Career Academy since January of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Woodland Regional Hawks will head out on the road to face off against the Waterbury Career Academy Spartans at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Woodland Regional suffered their closest loss yet this season on Friday. They fell just short of Holy Cross by a score of 58-56. While losing is never fun, Woodland Regional can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Connecticut basketball rankings (they are ranked 150th, while Holy Cross is ranked 33rd).
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was James Scampolino, who scored 16 points along with six rebounds. John Napiello was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Meanwhile, Waterbury Career Academy waltzed into their game last Friday with three straight wins but they left with four. They enjoyed a cozy 71-55 win over Crosby.
This is the second loss in a row for Woodland Regional and nudges their season record down to 3-9. As for Waterbury Career Academy, their victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-2.
Woodland Regional was dealt a bruising 94-56 defeat at the hands of Waterbury Career Academy in their previous meeting back in January of 2023. Thankfully for Woodland Regional, Sonny Pierce (who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds and five steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
