Softball Recap: Newcomb Skyhawks vs. Grants Pirates

Suggested Video

Newcomb extended their losing streak to nine on Monday, dropping their season record down to 3-13 in the process. They lost 18-0 to the Grants Pirates. If the Skyhawks were looking for revenge after losing 18-3 to the Pirates when the teams met back in March of 2022, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Grants, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-8 record this season. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Grants' part, Alynn Othole looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Othole has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one hit in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Grants let Olivia Toivanen and Delilah Martinez run wild. Toivanen fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 3-for-3, while Martinez went 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. That's the most RBI Toivanen has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Bianca Murillo, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

While Newcomb had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
