Basketball Recap: Irwin County Comes Up Short

Irwin County suffered their closest loss since December 17, 2024 on Friday. They fell just short of the Atkinson County Rebels by a score of 43-40. The Indians were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Rebels earlier this season, when they won 60-52.

When it comes to explaining why Irwin County lost, don't look at Sam Guy. Despite the final result, he almost dropped a triple-double on 16 points, nine rebounds, and nine blocks. Guy is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last eight games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Caleb Barrett, who went 5 of 8 on his way to 10 points.

This is the second loss in a row for Irwin County and nudges their season record down to 7-12. As for Atkinson County, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 5-13.

Irwin County will square off against Brooks County at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Brooks County is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.8 points per game this season. As for Atkinson County, they will face off against Charlton County at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
