Baseball Recap: Make It Four in a Row for Browne

Browne came tearing into Thursday's match with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the South Mountain Jaguars an 8-0 shutout. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 12-2 last Tuesday.

Abraham Guzman made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 14 over seven innings pitched. He is becoming a predictor of Browne's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 3-4 when he doesn't). Guzman was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Axel Inzunza and Josmel Cruz Meza did most of the damage at the plate: Inzunza scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4, while Cruz Meza scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Cruz Meza has become a key player for Browne: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 3-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Erubiel Delgado, who scored a run and stole three bases while going 2-for-3.

Browne's win bumped their record up to 6-4. As for South Mountain, they are on a 20-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-14.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Browne will venture away from home to take on Maryvale at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bruins' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season. As for South Mountain, they are taking a road trip to challenge Sierra Linda at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
