Basketball Game Preview: Edison Vikings vs. Liberty Lions

The Edison Vikings will challenge the Liberty Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Edison is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.3 points per game this season.

Edison is headed into the contest having just suffered their closest loss since December 12, 2023 on Wednesday. They fell just short of Pittsburg by a score of 52-49. The Vikings have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Despite the defeat, Edison had strong showings from Tytus Billingsly, who went 5 for 9 on his way to 14 points, and Mekhi Jefferson, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards. Jefferson has been hot, having posted ten or more boards the last eight times he's played. Devin Finister was another key player, putting up ten points.

Meanwhile, Liberty came tearing into Thursday's match with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19 points) and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 74-61 victory over the Cougars. Given the Lions' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 50th, while the Cougars are ranked 164th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Edison's loss dropped their record down to 8-7. As for Liberty, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-2 record this season.

Edison was able to grind out a solid win over Liberty in their previous matchup back in November of 2021, winning 62-50. The rematch might be a little tougher for Edison since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
