Two dominant backs in Nick Evans and Damon Mitchell are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Nipomo Titans will square off against the Atascadero Greyhounds at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Nipomo knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past five contests -- so hopefully Atascadero likes a good challenge.
If Atascadero heads into halftime all tied up, they better play a good second half: that's when Nipomo took over last week. The Titans enjoyed a cozy 49-34 victory over Morro Bay on Friday. The win continues a trend for the Titans in their matchups with the Pirates: they've now won eight in a row.

Nipomo can attribute much of their success to Griffin Groshart, who threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 passes, and also rushed for 32 yards and one score. Groshart's passing game has become a key predictor of the Titans' success: the team is 5-2 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Nipomo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 348 rushing yards. They are 6-1 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Nipomo's defensive line and their five sacks. Joseph Huitron refused to say out of the backfield, picking up two sacks all by himself.
Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Atascadero's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. The game between the Greyhounds and San Luis Obispo didn't end well, with the Greyhounds falling 28-14.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Mitchell and Colbin Garrison. Garrison had a great game and rushed for 296 yards and four TDs while picking up 8.0 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Mitchell was balling out in the loss, rushing for 215 yards and one score while picking up 12.6 yards per carry.
Atascadero's loss dropped their record down to 5-5. As for Nipomo, their record now sits at 6-4.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Nipomo has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 227.3 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Atascadero struggles in that department as they've been averaging 186.1 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Nipomo against Atascadero when the teams last played back in April of 2021, as the team secured a 49-12 victory. In that game, the Titans amassed a halftime lead of 35-12, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
