Baseball Recap: Maine East Comes Up Short

Maine East had lost 11 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 2-17 to make it 12. They came up short against the Niles West Wolves, falling 7-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Wolves this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-1 on Monday.

As for Niles West, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-14 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games.

For Niles West's part, the result came thanks to Teddy Schroeder's shutout, as he gave up just two hits and racked up seven Ks. Schroeder has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Lucas Som, who went 3-for-4 with five stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Niles West's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 2-1 (and 10-13 when he doesn't). Christian Guzman was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

While Maine East had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday.
