Basketball Recap: Cardinal Newman Takes a Loss

Cardinal Newman was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They lost 62-41 to the Hammond Skyhawks. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cardinals this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 55-36 back in January.

Despite the defeat, Cardinal Newman saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Luis Echevarria went 8 for 17 en route to 21 points and five rebounds. Echevarria's evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Wade Marsh, who posted 14 points and six boards.

Cardinal Newman's loss dropped their record down to 8-13. As for Hammond, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season.

Cardinal Newman wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 75-63 defeat against Northside Christian Academy on the 6th. As for Hammond, they will head out to take on Heathwood Hall Episcopal at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hammond knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past five contests -- so hopefully Heathwood Hall Episcopal likes a good challenge.
