Basketball Recap: Aurora West College Prep Academy Comes Up Short

Aurora West College Prep Academy lost against Arvada back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Aurora West College Prep Academy Spartans were dealt a 61-21 loss at the hands of the Arvada Bulldogs. The Spartans were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-12.

Despite the defeat, Aurora West College Prep Academy saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Maria Gutierrez Benitez almost dropped a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. That was a full 57.1% of Aurora West College Prep Academy's points, marking the third time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points.

Even though they lost, Aurora West College Prep Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in three consecutive games.

Arvada's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Carmen Medina, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and ten rebounds. Medina also grabbed eight steals, which is notable because Arvada is 7-1 when she posts at least five steals, but 3-8 otherwise. Taylor Dye was another key player, dropping a double-double with ten points and ten assists.

Aurora West College Prep Academy's loss dropped their record down to 3-13. As for Arvada, they now have a winning record of 10-9.

Looking ahead, Aurora West College Prep Academy will venture away from home to square off against Twin Peaks Classical Academy at 5:00 p.m. on February 19th. As for Arvada, they will welcome Middle Park at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Middle Park will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Arvada surely won't give up without a fight.
