Baseball Game Preview: Southwestern Piasa Birds vs. Calhoun Warriors

Southwestern has gone 8-2 against Calhoun recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Piasa Birds will welcome the Warriors at 10:00 a.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.

On Friday, Southwestern needed a bit of extra time to put away Staunton. They had just enough and edged out the Bulldogs 3-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Piasa Birds have posted against the Bulldogs since April 8, 2016.

Ian Brantley was excellent, going 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Southwestern is 4-1 when Brantley posts three or more hits, but 4-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Ike Austin, who went 1-for-4 with two runs.

Meanwhile, Calhoun sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 victory over Greenfield/Northwestern on Thursday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Warriors.

The team relied heavily on Max Toppmeyer, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April.

Southwestern's win bumped their record up to 8-14. As for Calhoun, their victory bumped their record up to 14-3.
