Softball Recap: Smithsburg Comes Up Short

Smithsburg extended their losing streak to six on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 2-8 in the process. They came up short against the Fort Hill Sentinels, falling 12-4. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Leopards of the 7-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

As for Fort Hill, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 4-11. Their offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last four games.

For Fort Hill's part, Haley Metz made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Metz was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Brynnan Wigger was a standout: she went 3-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Summer Welsh, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Smithsburg will face off against North Hagerstown at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. As for Fort Hill, they will venture away from home to square off against Saint James at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The Sentinels' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Saints have averaged an impressive 9.3 runs per game this season.
