Volleyball Recap: Columbus Takes a Loss

If Columbus was feeling good fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Jefferson on Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Discoverers took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lincoln East Spartans on Tuesday. The loss continues a trend for the Discoverers in their meetings with the Spartans: they've now lost five in a row.

Columbus started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The final score came out to 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22.

Paighton Erb paced Columbus' offense, picking up 12 kills. Erb got some help from Carley Kapels and her 21 assists. Finally, Erb was also a dominant defender, finishing with a team-high 13 blocks.

Leading Lincoln East to victory were Rowan Servi and Eva Gutz. Servi had 11 digs and three aces, while Gutz had 13 digs and three assists. That's the most assists Gutz has posted over her last seven matchups. Addy Fullerton also deserves some recognition as she had her first digs of the season.

Columbus' defeat dropped their record down to 6-11. As for Lincoln East, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-11.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Columbus will square off against rival Lincoln High on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Lincoln East is set to face off against their familiar foe Kearney on Tuesday.
