Baseball Recap: Newbury Park Gets the Win

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Newbury Park ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-7 win over the Oaks Christian Lions. This was payback for the Panthers, who suffered a 4-3 loss the last time these two teams met.

Jacob Marks looked comfortable as he tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Nathaniel Nunez, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. He is becoming a predictor of Newbury Park's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is undefeated (and 9-12 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Alan Espinal, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs and one double.

Newbury Park kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are 6-2 when they post 11 or more hits.

Newbury Park is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-12 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.4 runs over those games. As for Oaks Christian, their defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 15-8.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: the Lions beat Newbury Park by a score of 8-1 on Thursday.
