Football Recap: Elgin Piles Up the Points Against Cory-Rawson

Elgin had to skate by with only a one-point margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 39-point drubbing they dealt Cory-Rawson on Friday. The Comets really took it to the Fighting Hornets for the full four quarters, racking up a 39-0 victory. The game was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Comets had established a 32-point advantage.

Elgin got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Archer Johnston out in front who rushed for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 13 carries. With that strong performance, Johnston is now averaging an impressive 104 rushing yards per game. Another back making a difference was Jack Van Gundy, who rushed for 91 yards and one TD on only 11 carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Elgin was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 381 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 242 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Elgin's defense and their five sacks. That dominant display was truly a team effort as five different players picked up one apiece.

Elgin now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Cory-Rawson, they are on a 14-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Elgin will host Lucas at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Cory-Rawson, they will welcome Waynesfield-Goshen at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Fighting Hornets will be up against the Tigers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 27 points per match), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
