South Mecklenburg and Ardrey Kell are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2022, but likely not for long. The Sabres will head out to take on the Knights at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. South Mecklenburg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
While South Mecklenburg's win against Sun Valley wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Sabres had just enough and edged out the Spartans 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Sabres have posted since March 17th.
Madison Norris spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on six hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Tia Montgomery, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. Ellie Gerin was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
South Mecklenburg hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Ardrey Kell came tearing into Tuesday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Mustangs 9-2. The Knights might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by seven runs or more this season.
Ardrey Kell also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Jenna Volturno gave up just two earned runs on six hits and racked up six Ks.
At the plate, Ardrey Kell let Alexa Amodio and Kambria Bragg run wild. Amodio scored a run while going 3-for-4, while Bragg scored two runs while going 1-for-3. That's the most hits Amodio has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Tessa Sanchez-Barrios, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.
South Mecklenburg is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Ardrey Kell, their record now sits at 11-7.
Thursday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. South Mecklenburg has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .495. However, it's not like Ardrey Kell struggles in that department as they've averaged .450. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
