Basketball Recap: St. Stephens Drops Season-High Score on West Iredell

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Stephens). They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the West Iredell Warriors 87-85. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Indians have posted against the Warriors since December 17, 2018.

Noah Vanbeurden was his usual excellent self, shooting 5-for-8 from long range and almost dropping a double-double on 43 points and nine rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which he has scored at least a third of St. Stephens' points. Jachavis Sherrill was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 16 points and nine boards.

St. Stephens smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in four consecutive games.

Despite the loss, West Iredell still got an impressive performance from Jordan Patterson, who went 16 for 23 on his way to 42 points and seven rebounds. Patterson is crushing it when it comes to points: he's scored at least 19 every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Phillip Maxey, who went 5 of 10 en route to 15 points and five steals.

St. Stephens' win bumped their record up to 7-11. As for West Iredell, they have also traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Stephens will challenge North Iredell at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. St. Stephens is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.3 points per game this season. As for West Iredell, they will face off against Foard at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. West Iredell is facing Foard at the right time seeing as Foard is stuck on an 11-game losing streak.
