Baseball Recap: Madison-Ridgeland Academy Falls Short Against Ranked Jackson Academy

Madison-Ridgeland Academy faced Jackson Academy in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Patriots took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Raiders. The Patriots were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Raiders apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Madison-Ridgeland Academy got a good showing from Dylan Varnell, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Varnell is becoming a predictor of the Patriots' success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 5-2 (and 8-9 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Gunnar Swanson made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.

Madison-Ridgeland Academy's loss dropped their record down to 13-11. As for Jackson Academy, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 15-7.

While Madison-Ridgeland Academy had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
