The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Cardinal Newman came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 99th in South Carolina, while Danville is ranked 365th in Illinois).
Cardinal Newman lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Elton Smith jr., who scored 13 points along with five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Desmond Harrington, who scored five points along with nine rebounds.
Cardinal Newman has not been sharp recently, as they've lost ten of their last 13 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season. As for Danville, their win bumped their record up to 5-9.
