St. Joseph gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 54-52 win over the Altamont Longhorns. This was payback for the Jayhawks, who suffered a 38-20 defeat the last time these two teams met.
St. Joseph can attribute much of their success to Ryan Castaneda, who rushed for 107 yards on only 15 carries. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 55 yards.
Special teams also deserves some recognition, posting 11 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Izaiah Hebert, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. St. Joseph is set to square off against their familiar foe Monticello at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Altamont will challenge rival Utah Military Academy - Camp Williams at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
