Baseball Recap: Rye Comes Up Short

Rye fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Las Animas on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Trojans by a score of 3-2. The Thunderbolts just can't catch a break and have now endured seven losses in a row.

Branson Burbidge put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.

Burbidge wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Wyatt Scheid, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Jackson Bjorum also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Rye's defeat dropped their record down to 2-9. As for Las Animas, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-1.

Looking ahead, Rye will venture away from home to face off against Colorado Springs Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lions have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.5 runs per game on average), something the Thunderbolts will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Las Animas, they will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against Buena Vista at 4:00 p.m. The Demons have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.89 runs per game on average), something the Trojans will no doubt try to take advantage of.
