Ukiah couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They received a blow on Friday as they fell 40-22 to the Rancho Cotate Cougars. The Wildcats haven't had much luck with the Cougars recently, as the team's come up short the last six times they've met.

When it comes to explaining why Ukiah lost, don't look at Omaurie Phillips. Despite the final result, he picked up 257 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Beau David was another key player, having thrown for 294 yards and three touchdowns.

Rancho Cotate was led to victory by Gio Martinez and Wyatt Gregori. Martinez rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries, while Gregori rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries.
