Basketball Recap: Lafayette Comes Up Short

Lafayette suffered their biggest loss since January 23rd on Monday. They were outmatched by the Bellevue West Thunderbirds and fell 61-34. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Fighting Irish came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 20th in Missouri, while the Thunderbirds are ranked 71st in Nebraska).

Bellevue West's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nyla Tatum led the charge by shooting 43% from the field to rack up 14 points and six boards. Another player making a difference was Yirah Sears, who posted eight points and four steals.

Having lost for the first time this season, Lafayette fell to 10-1. As for Bellevue West, their win bumped their record up to 3-4.

Lafayette will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Maryville at 6:30 p.m. on January 8, 2026. As for Bellevue West, they will be taking part in a tournament against Millard South at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday. The Thunderbirds will need to watch out since the Patriots have now posted at least 55 points in their last three games.
