Basketball Recap: Springfield Piles Up the Points Against Cotopaxi

Springfield won the last time they faced Cotopaxi and things went their way on Friday too. The Springfield Longhorns simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Cotopaxi Pirates 56-23. The Longhorns have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won ten games by 20 points or more this season.

Springfield was led to victory by Cobi Mackey and Jersey Speck. Mackey shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and dropped a double-double with 16 points and 12 steals, while Speck en route to 15 points along with eight steals and five boards. Speck is becoming a predictor of Springfield's success: when she posts at least three steals the team is undefeated (and 1-4 when she doesn't). Another player making a difference was Dakota Reid, who posted eight points and seven rebounds.

Springfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive contests.

When it comes to explaining why Cotopaxi lost, don't look at Hayden Eggleston. Despite the final result, she earned five points in addition to six boards and five steals. Eggleston has been hot for a while, having posted three or more steals the last 14 times she's played.

Springfield has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.9 points over those games. Cotopaxi's loss dropped their record down to 12-6.

Springfield has already played their next game, a 49-48 defeat against Swink on the 22nd. As for Cotopaxi, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 45-23 victory against Lake County on the 22nd.
