Softball Recap: Gates County Comes Up Short

If Gates County was riding high fresh off their 20-4 takedown of Bertie last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Red Barons lost 16-6 to the Perquimans Pirates on Tuesday. The defeat continues a trend for the Red Barons in their meetings with the Pirates: they've now lost five in a row.

Zoey Nowell and Taylor Westbrook stepped up to the plate in a big way. Nowell scored two runs while going 2-for-2, while Westbrook went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. London Barber was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.

Gates County's loss dropped their record down to 10-7. As for Perquimans, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-2 record this season.

While Gates County had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
