Softball Recap: Masconomet Regional Victorious

It may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but Masconomet Regional ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-3 victory over the Wilmington Wildcats. This was payback for the Chieftains, who suffered a 6-3 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Sydnee Vocino spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits.

On the hitting side, Ally Kelter and Logan Schaap did most of the damage at the plate: Kelter went 3-for-5 with one triple, while Schaap went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Angie Vecchio, who went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Masconomet Regional kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are 6-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Masconomet Regional is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Wilmington, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 5-2.

Coming up, Wilmington will head out to square off against Lowell Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Masconomet Regional will be paying especially close attention to the Wildcats' matchup: after the Wildcats face off against the Crusaders, they'll take on Masconomet Regional again at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
