Basketball Recap: Boulder Takes a Loss

Boulder easily dispatched Prairie View last Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Boulder Panthers fell just short of the Legacy Lightning by a score of 55-52 on Saturday. The Panthers haven't had much luck with the Lightning recently, as the team has come up short the last nine times they've met.

When it comes to explaining why Boulder lost, don't look at Megan Matthews. Despite the final result, she went 7-for-16 on her way to 20 points and five assists. Matthews is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 12 games she's played. Remi Kingdom was another key player, putting up 11 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Boulder smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Olivia Mortensen was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double with 40 points and 11 boards for Legacy. That makes it eight consecutive games in which Mortensen has scored at least a third of Legacy's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kennedy Martin, who posted four points in addition to six steals and five rebounds.

Boulder's defeat dropped their record down to 14-9. As for Legacy, their record is now 13-10.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Boulder is taking a road trip to square off against Overland at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing isn't great for Overland: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while Boulder has snatched up four consecutive wins on the road. As for Legacy, they will challenge Vista PEAK Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Vista PEAK Prep is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 54.7 points per game this season.
