Football Recap: Gretna Dragons vs. Scottsbluff Bearcats

Gretna and Scottsbluff squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Gretna had to settle for second. They were outmatched by the Scottsbluff Bearcats on the road and fell 55-27. The Dragons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bearcats apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in October of 2015.

Gretna's loss came despite strong showings from Bryce Lakers and Michael Knudsen. Lakers picked up 204 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Knudsen threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns. Lakers is becoming a predictor of Gretna's success: when he posts at least two receiving touchdowns the team is 4-1 (and 1-4 when he doesn't).

Leading Scottsbluff to victory were Nate Kelley and Desmonde Smith. Kelley rushed for 273 yards and six touchdowns on only 15 carries, while Smith rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 13.4 yards per carry. Smith really tore up the turf during one magnificent 81-yard run.

This is the second loss in a row for Gretna and nudges their season record down to 5-5. As for Scottsbluff, they pushed their record up to 9-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.

Gretna does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Scottsbluff, they will take on Elkhorn North at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both have allowed few points on average, (Scottsbluff: 9.4, Elkhorn North: 14.1) so any points scored will be well earned.
