Week 6 Large-School Player of the Week
Kyle Webster, Mustang – Webster may not have had the best performance of the weekend in Oklahoma, but he deserves this award not only for spearheading an upset of previous No. 1 Norman North on the road, but for the circumstances surrounding it.
Webster missed two weeks due to an emergency appendectomy. Senior Jeffrey Cohan replaced Webster and led the Broncos to an overtime victory over No. 8 Edmond Santa Fe and a comfortable victory over Lawton. Cohan was solid, throwing for 639 yards and seven touchdowns in two starts.
Webster was steady in his return against a fierce Norman North defense, rushing for 182 yards and a touchdown and throwing for another. For the season, Webster has thrown for 883 yards and seven scores and has added 374 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Mustang is for real, and Webster is a major force behind the emergence of the Broncos. After the final whistle blew, one of Mustang’s linemen picked Webster up in the air for hero’s sendoff.. However, the celebrations were minimal, as those in attendance and watching on television sensed Mustang expected to win.
Honorable Mention
Daeshonn Buford, Edmond Santa Fe – Buford, one of the top defensive linemen in the state, blocked a punt and returned a fumble 7 yards for a touchdown in a 72-12 defeat of Southmoore.
Clint Chelf, Enid – After two straight losses, Chelf ensured the Plainsmen would get back into the win column with 363 yards and four touchdowns through the air as Enid hammered Choctaw, 52-24.
Johnny Deaton, Sand Springs – Despite a 39-37 loss to Muskogee, Deaton turned in a huge effort. Deaton threw for 182 yards and added 157 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Sandites. Deaton has rushed for 957 yards and eight touchdowns this season.
Timothy Flanders, Midwest City – Flanders surpassed 1,000 yards for the season with 212 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-7 pasting of Lawton Eisenhower. Flanders scored on runs of 2, 52, and 64 yards to pace a 37-point outburst in the second quarter as the Bombers led 49-0 at halftime. Flanders has 1,091 yards and 17 touchdowns this season and averages 14.2 yards per carry.
J.T. Realmuto, Carl Albert – The junior quarterback stormed to 266 total yards and three touchdowns in a 40-15 victory over Noble. Realmuto threw for 208 yards and two scores, including a 65-yard strike to Trevonte Porter, and added a 44-yard touchdown run for the Titans.
Darwin Rideau, Star Spencer – Rideau ran wild in a 39-7 win over Cushing. Rideau set a school record with a 96-yard touchdown scamper en route to 232 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. Rideau added a 26-yard effort for his other touchdown in the victory.
Steven Sumpter, Edmond Santa Fe – Sumpter rushed for three touchdowns and caught two more as the Wolves routed Southmoore, 72-12. Sumpter scored on runs of 4, 5, and 8 yards and also caught touchdown passes of 25 and 35 yards from quarterback Michael Hodges in the win.
Week 6 Storylines
Mustang Takes Out Norman North… Barely
Mustang took a commanding 30-7 lead in the third quarter and held on to beat previous No. 1 Norman North, 30-29. It appeared Norman North would send the game to overtime with just over a minute left after Tyler Tettleton hit Nyko Symonds for the second time in the fourth quarter from 35 yards out to bring the T-Wolves within one. The extra point was blocked by Nick Cartwright, sending Mustang into celebratory mode.
Union New No. 1
Thanks to a 48-0 pounding of Yukon for its fifth straight win, Tulsa Union moves to No. 1 this week after Mustang ousted Norman North. Junior signal caller Chase Boyce threw for three touchdowns in the rout for the Redskins. Jenks checks in at No. 2 after handing Broken Arrow its second straight loss, 21-7. The Trojans pounded Broken Arrow for 285 rushing yards on 45 carries. Unbeaten Midwest City is third, with Mustang checking in at four in Class 6A.
