Basketball Recap: Lindsey Griffin's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Academic Magnet over Burke

Academic Magnet was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They took a 41-29 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Burke Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Raptors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 219th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 70th).

Several Raptors players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Lindsey Griffin, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. Hayden Moody was another key player, putting up five points and ten boards.

Even though they lost, Academic Magnet smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in eight consecutive matchups.

Burke found their leader in freshman Nathaya Phoenix, who almost dropped a triple-double with 26 points, ten rebounds, and nine blocks. Those nine blocks gave Phoenix a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendall Smith, who posted three points and four steals.

Academic Magnet's defeat dropped their record down to 6-14. As for Burke, the victory (which was their 12th in a row) raised their record to 20-5.

Academic Magnet didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 44-42 loss against Andrews on the 12th. As for Burke, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 50-49 defeat against Timberland on the 12th.
