Preview: Poplarville Hornets vs. Bay Tigers
Poplarville has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Bay Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Poplarville will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Mississippi Rankings (they are ranked 210th, while the Tigers are ranked 41st).
Last Tuesday, Poplarville came up short against the Wildcats and fell 55-44. Poplarville has struggled against the Wildcats recently, as their matchup on Tuesday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Janiyah Jones, who scored 13 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Tameah Bester, who scored ten points.
Meanwhile, Bay came tearing into Tuesday's contest with 12 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.8 points) and they left with even more momentum. They strolled past Columbia with points to spare, taking the game 29-15.
Poplarville has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last ten contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-14 record this season. As for Bay, their victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 22-5.
Poplarville suffered a grim 51-26 defeat to the Tigers in their previous matchup back in December of 2023. Can Poplarville avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
