Softball Game Preview: Fairmont Golden Tornadoes vs. East Columbus Gators

Fairmont is 1-9 against East Columbus since March of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Golden Tornadoes will challenge the Gators at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Fairmont saw some tournament action on Saturday. They walked away with a 10-7 victory over Heide Trask.

Meanwhile, East Columbus came tearing into Saturday's match with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.4 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They blew past the Rams 13-3. The Gators might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 games by six runs or more this season.

The team relied heavily on Aleigh Godwin, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. Skylah Collins was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.

East Columbus was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .464. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher in 11 consecutive contests.

East Columbus pushed their record up to 16-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Fairmont, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-10.

Fairmont suffered a grim 11-2 defeat to East Columbus when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Golden Tornadoes avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
