Basketball Recap: Hawthorne Takes a Loss

If Hawthorne was riding high fresh off their 73-16 takedown of Calvary Chapel on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Cougars were beaten by the Pioneer Titans 88-34 on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 610th, while the Titans are ranked 167th).

When it comes to explaining why Hawthorne lost, don't look at Kyron Blanchette. Despite the final result, he posted 13 points. That was a full 38.2% of the Cougars' points, marking the third time in a row Blanchette has earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Hearn, who had seven points.

Hawthorne's loss dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Pioneer, the win keeps them at an undefeated 10-0.

Looking ahead, Hawthorne won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against California Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Pioneer, they and Santa Fe will face off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday without much rest, having both just played.
