Preview: Mountain Island Charter Raptor vs. Community School of Davidson Spartans
Mountain Island Charter is 1-9 against Community School of Davidson since February of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Mountain Island Charter Raptor will head out on the road to face off against the Community School of Davidson Spartans at 6:00 p.m. Hopefully Mountain Island Charter focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 25 on Friday.
Mountain Island Charter suffered their biggest defeat since November 29, 2023 on Friday. They had to suffer through a rough 56-29 loss at the hands of Lincoln Charter. Mountain Island Charter was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 30-8.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Cayla Bridgewater, who scored nine points along with two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kayla Fudge, who scored three points along with 12 rebounds and two steals.
Mountain Island Charter struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
In what's become a running theme this season, Community School of Davidson gave their fans yet another huge win on Friday. They breezed by Pine Lake Prep at home to the tune of 73-32. Given Community School of Davidson's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 109th, while Pine Lake Prep is ranked 287th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Community School of Davidson can attribute much of their success to Tyler Baughan, who scored 18 points along with eight rebounds and six steals, and Regan Downey, who scored 23 points along with six rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Baughan pulled down eight or more rebounds. Scarlett Soares was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Mountain Island Charter's defeat was their fourth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 5-8. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 23.8 points per game. As for Community School of Davidson, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-1.
Tuesday's game is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Mountain Island Charter have been dynamite from deep this season, having only made 33.7% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Community School of Davidson struggles in that department as they've made 40.7% of their threes per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Mountain Island Charter was dealt a bruising 61-12 loss at the hands of Community School of Davidson in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Baughan, who scored 26 points along with six steals and five rebounds. Now that Mountain Island Charter knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
